Freedom Theatre: London Event

Freedom Theatre Films and Discussion From Palestine

Where: Free Word Centre
60 Farringdon Road, EC1R 3GA
Time: 9.00 pm

Tickets £5 Cons £3

Presented with Culture+Conflict, Index on Censorship, and Article 19

An evening focusing on The Freedom Theatre, the extraordinarily inspirational and courageous cultural initiative based in the Jenin Refugee Camp on the West Bank. The Theatre provides opportunities and ambition for children growing up in a society struggling with increasing isolation, violence, fragmentation and disillusion. The artistic director Juliano Mer Khamis was assassinated in Jenin on 4 April 2011, but the theatre continues its work.

We are privileged to welcome film-maker Ahmad Alaraj from the Theatre, who will present Arna’s Children and a series of short films. He will be in conversation with the new director of the Free Word Centre, Rose Fenton, co-founder and co-director of the London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT).

The evening will be in two parts, with a single ticket, which is valid for both.

Arna’s Children (2003, 84 min) directed by Juliano Mer Khamis and Danniel Danniel, a documentary about the children’s theatre group established by Arna Mer-Khamis, Juliano’s mother, an Israeli Jewish political and human rights activist. This moving film, which won Best Documentary Feature at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival, follows the lives of Arna and the members of the theatre.

Ahmad Alaraj of the Freedom Theatre will present and discuss four short films about the continuing work of the Theatre today with Rose Fenton: the challenges it faces working with young people in Jenin and the transformative effect it has on their lives. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion with Ahmad.

Food and refreshments will be available.

Protest Against Veolia ‘s Inclusion in the NLWA Procurement

Protest Against Veolia ‘s Inclusion in the NLWA Procurement!
When? Thursday 22nd September at 1.45pm
Where? Camden Town Hall, Judd Street (opposite St Pancras station): WC1H 9JE
Why? Veolia has not been excluded from the massive £4.7billion waste and fuel contracts in north London. The 14 NLWA Councillors who will be voting on these contracts are meeting at Camden Town Hall. In their meeting they would be discussing Veolia’s bids. This is the last NLWA meeting before it announces whether Veolia is shortlisted for the Fuel Use contract. The Waste Services contract shortlist may also be decided following this meeting. We call on the NLWA to exclude Veolia from the shortlists.
This is an opportunity for us to show our dissatisfaction to the Authority’s councillors on Veolia’s continued involvement in these bids. Please join us to make sure the NLWA knows our views on Veolia before their meeting at Camden Town Hall. If you are on Facebook, go to the event page

Banner Making to Protest the Arms Fair

A sinister visitation will be arriving in east London on 13th September – the DSEI arms fair at the Excel Centre.

Among the repressive regimes buying and selling arms, Israel will be putting on a showcase of its ‘battle-tested’ weapons that have injured and killed thousands of Palestinians.

To protest at this atrocious event, Tower Hamlets Jenin Friendship Association will have a banner making workshop on Sunday 11th September at 2pm at Mile End Park in preparation for the protest. We will meet outside the Palm Tree pub, off the canal and Haverfield Road and will move on to the park proper to make our banner.

We will meet at St Barnabas Church, off Roman Road, Bow in the event of rain.

Initial ideas for the banner include making a mock separation Wall decorated with text detailing incidents of injury and death from Israeli/ UK made arms.

Come and join us in making a statement against the profiteering by UK and Israel in maiming and killing Palestinians!
