About Us

العربية

The Tower Hamlets and Jenin Friendship Association (THJFA) grew out of the ‘Twinning with Jenin Campaign’. The idea of twinning Tower Hamlets with Jenin, in the north of the occupied Palestine territory was suggested initially in 2002 during the siege of the Jenin refugee camp. We are part of the Britain-Palestine Twinning Network.

Since its formation THJFA has called our local politicians to account over the issues relating to Palestine by regularly visiting surgeries and council meetings.

To raise awareness of the plight of Palestinians, we have organised public meetings, film shows and entertainments, as well as five exhibitions of children’s art. We have hosted many visitors from Jenin, including musicians, health professionals, educationalists and representatives from local government.

Although the idea of twinning has taken a back seat to the development of links and introducing the people of Jenin and Tower Hamlets to one another we are still keen to get political recognition for the solidarity of the two regions.

We invite everyone in Tower Hamlets and Jenin, as well as supporters elsewhere to join our Facebook group and to campaign with us. You can also follow @twinjenin on Twitter for regular updates on the situation in the West Bank. You will find there, and here on this website, details about our upcoming events and activities.

Campaigns

We support the global campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions and take part in relevant local action, presently including the campaign against Veolia.

Projects

This year we will be focusing upon promoting direct links with Jenin by providing volunteers to live and work in the city. We are particularly interested in professionals in health, education and other areas who have the expertise to train Palestinians in these areas, thus providing longevity to our contribution in Jenin.

If you are interested in volunteering out in Jenin (preferably for 3 weeks or longer), please contact twinjenin@hotmail.co.uk
